Why Nikwax Hydrophobic Down?
It keeps you dry: Nikwax Hydrophobic Down resists wetting; maintaining the insulation properties and breathability of your down gear...
It keeps you warm: Outdoor gear using Nikwax Hydrophobic Down resists getting wet, so the loft and insulation properties of your gear are maintained and you stay warm...
It keeps you comfortable: When other down insulating gear fails, Nikwax Hydrophobic Down continues performing, keeping you comfortable for longer...
It keeps you safe: Nikwax Hydrophobic Down is treated with Nikwax Waterproofing which is water based, free of fluorocarbon chemicals and environmentally friendly...
Why down items lose their insulating properties when they get wet...
Down filled items are used to provide lightweight insulation to keep you warm. The structure of down allows air to be trapped between its filaments and warmed by body heat to provide insulation for the user.
Down filled items are most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If down gets wet it clumps together. This causes it to lose loft and insulation as it can’t trap air effectively. When wet, down loses all of its insulating properties, as water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air. It will also gain weight and its breathability will be significantly reduced; leaving you feeling cold, wet and uncomfortable.
Therefore it is important to stop down from getting wet. Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ is water resistant, maintaining insulation and reducing weight gain.
Down is ideal for very cold and dry conditions...
Down has exceptional insulating properties, trapping air between its filaments to keep you warm. No other product offers so much insulation for so little weight and bulk. It’s ideal for sleeping bags, jackets, gilets and down clothing in general.
Water, whether it is rain or condensation from sweat, compromises the insulating properties of down. If down gets wet it loses all of its insulating capacity and also causes weight gain. This reduces the comfort of the user, causing them to feel cold and wet, but more importantly the reduction in insulation is dangerous and in severe cases can lead to hypothermia. When wet, down loses all of its insulating properties, as water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air.
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ is a water resistant down fill which reduces water absorption and maintains insulation, keeping you warm, dry and comfortable.
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ filled items are ideal for people who are outside in a range of cold conditions...
Anyone who is outside in cold weather will benefit from Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ filled items. Whether you’re a mountaineer, skier or snowboarder or you’re regularly outside in cold conditions, you will benefit from the lightweight insulation and water resistance of Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™.
Use Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ items in a wide range of conditions...
In comparison to conventional untreated down items, those filled with Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ are more versatile and therefore suitable for use in a wider range of conditions.
As they are more resistant to moisture Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ filled items will deliver increased performance when compared to those filled with conventional untreated down in equivalent conditions.
Additionally, Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ filled items will continue to be effective in conditions where conventional untreated down filled items would fail.
Down provides excellent insulation but is easily compromised...
Conventional untreated down is not water resistant and will absorb moisture, causing the down to lose its loft and insulation. Basically, if down items get wet, users will get cold. This reduces the range of conditions in which conventional down is effective.
Alternative hydrophobic down fills may use a fluorocarbon treatment. Fluorocarbons pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer.
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ is guaranteed to be water resistant, highly durable and fluorocarbon free.
Use Nikwax Aftercare to maintain the performance of your down item...
Use Nikwax Aftercare products to get the best out of your Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ filled gear. Regular maintenance will help your gear achieve its full potential and maximise its useful life.
Cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash™ will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt, but also revitalise insulation, breathability and Durable Water Repellency (DWR).
Nikwax Down Proof™ will replenish DWR, causing water to bead on the outer fabric of the gear once more. The DWR of Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ will also be replenished, maintaining loft, insulation and breathability.
How Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ makes your gear perform better...
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ has a flexible Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish on each individual down filament. This reduces absorption of moisture protecting down from perspiration, condensation and precipitation and maintaining loft and insulation in cold and damp conditions.
Keeping down free from moisture allows it to be effective for longer when in use. Additionally, it is protected from microbial action which can cause breakdown of damp down, therefore increasing the usable lifetime of your item.
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ prolongs the effective life of your down gear.
Like all Nikwax products, Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ is safe for users...
Nikwax takes great care to minimise the effect of Nikwax products on the environment and on you, the consumer.
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ is treated with Nikwax Waterproofing.
Nikwax waterproofing products are WaterBased, non-aerosol, non-flammable, non-hazardous and environmentally friendly. They contain no harmful solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and are completely free of fluorocarbons (which have been shown to be persistent in the environment and have been associated with serious health issues).

Regular maintenance with Nikwax Aftercare will optimise performance and maximise useful life...
Through use, the outer surface and the down fill of your down item will pick up contaminants which attract water, such as dirt and body oils from sweat. This masks the effect of any Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating, leading to fabric and down 'wetting out' when exposed to moisture. Therefore, your down gear could be soaking up water just because it is dirty.
If your down items are relatively new, or have been recently treated with Nikwax Down Proof™, then cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash™ will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt, but also revitalise insulation, breathability and DWR.
However, once the gear has been thoroughly used, you will need to add DWR, using Nikwax Down Proof™, after cleaning first with Nikwax Down Wash™. Nikwax Down Proof™ will replenish DWR, causing water to bead on the outer fabric of the gear once more. The DWR of Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ will also be replenished, maintaining loft, insulation and breathability.
It is recommended that larger items are cleaned & waterproofed professionally.
How you treat your down is as important as the products you use...
Wet down is heavy, so it is important to use the right wash cycle to ensure no damage occurs to your machine or your down items. A gentle cycle with a slow spin is recommended.
After washing it is important that down items are thoroughly dried. Leaving down wet or damp can ruin it completely, so it’s good practice to dry your down items as soon as possible.
What to do if your down items get wet...
Leaving down wet or damp can ruin it completely, so it’s good practice to dry your down items as soon as possible.
To get the maximum amount of water out of your down it’s best to spin dry multiple times, each time incrementally increasing the speed of the spin cycle. Wet down is heavy, so if items are spun too quickly while still holding a large amount of water it is possible that internal baffles may be broken.
Tumble drying is recommended (if care label allows) to ensure that the down is dried thoroughly and as quickly as possible. Tumble dry according to manufacturer’s instructions on a low setting, teasing apart clumps repeatedly during drying process to help restore loft to the down. Ensure that there is sufficient room in the tumble drier to house the item once dry, as items will return to their original size during the drying process.
Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ items will dry faster than items filled with conventional untreated down.
