Why breathability is essential for the comfort of your animal...

Your animal is most likely to get clammy and uncomfortable in wet or damp conditions if the breathability of their waterproof rug or coat is impaired. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the rug/coat can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your animal rug/coat must be maintained to ensure comfort. It will eventually wear off and need to be renewed with Nikwax Rug Proof™.

Waterproof fabrics need to be breathable...

Some animals, including dogs and horses, can be subjected to the elements while outside. When it rains, waterproof blankets and coats are used to keep them dry and comfortable.

It is important that these waterproof fabrics allow moisture vapor to pass through them, or ‘breathe’; otherwise moisture cannot evaporate, so will condense on the inside of the item. Additionally, if the outer fabric absorbs water and ‘wets out’ the item’s breathability will be reduced. Both of these situations will lead to your animal getting clammy, cold and uncomfortable.

The breathability of rugs and coats can be maintained by ensuring the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) is kept in good condition. Nikwax Rug Proof™ adds DWR, which prevents water absorption, while maintaining breathability, keeping your animals dry and comfortable.

Breathable waterproofs aren’t just for humans…

Anyone who is outside when it is raining will benefit from breathable waterproof clothing. This includes horses out grazing and dogs being taken for a walk in the rain!

Use Nikwax Rug Proof™ when your animal blankets and coats soak up water...

Your waterproof animal rugs and coats could be soaking up water just because they are dirty. First, try cleaning them with Nikwax Rug Wash™ and if your animal rug or coat is fairly new, or recently re-waterproofed the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalized just from cleaning. But, once the rug/coat has been thoroughly worn, you will need to add DWR, using Nikwax Rug Proof™, after cleaning first with Nikwax Rug Wash™.

Breathable animal rugs and coats need Nikwax Rug Proof™ to maintain comfort…

Nikwax Rug Proof™ is a safe product to use on your animal’s breathable waterproof items.

Alternative waterproofing products are often solvent-based and are flammable; alternatively, they may be water-based and use PFCs. PFCs pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer.

Nikwax Rug Proof™ is water-based, non-flammable, contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is PFC-Free. Nikwax Rug Proof™ has been specifically designed and optimized for breathable waterproof fabrics, providing Durable Water Repellency (DWR) while maintaining breathability. The wash in application treats all areas of the item, ensuring optimum comfort for your animal. Additionally, Nikwax Rug Proof™ requires no heat to develop its DWR.

Cleaning properly can be as important as waterproofing...

Using the right cleaning product is as important as using the right waterproofing product. Conventional detergents leave behind a thin water-absorbent film on materials, which masks their water repellency (DWR). Therefore, always clean your animal’s waterproof rugs and coats with Nikwax Rug Wash™. Remember that dirt itself works against water repellency, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.

How Nikwax Rug Proof™ protects your animal...

Nikwax Rug Proof adds Durable Water Repellency (DWR) while maintaining breathability. It is quick and easy to apply in the washing machine, and its DWR develops on air drying.

Nikwax Rug Wash™ has been specifically designed and optimised for breathable waterproof animal rugs and coats. It leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibers allowing moisture vapor to pass through, maintaining breathability, while protecting your animal from getting wet in the rain.

Finally, washing machine application ensures that the treatment goes right through the rug or coat, treating seams, tapes and cords, as well as the fabric.

Like all Nikwax products, Nikwax Rug Proof is made with care for the environment...

Nikwax takes great care to minimise the effect of Nikwax products on the environment and on you, the consumer. Nikwax waterproofing products are WaterBased, non-aerosol, non-flammable, non-hazardous and environmentally friendly. They contain no harmful solvents, and are completely free of PFCs (which have been shown to be persistent in the environment and have been associated with serious health issues).
